Blue Devils swept on Florida getaway day

CLERMONT, Fla. -- Fredonia closed out its Florida trip Friday with losses to Bowdoin, 6-5, and St. Lawrence, 4-1.

The Blue Devils (3-8) squandered a five-run lead in the first game of the day vs, Bowdoin. Fredonia loaded the bases in the top of the first on an infield error, a hit batsman, and a walk, before Madeline Medina (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) doubled into the right-center gap to score three runs. Nikki Lent (Yaphank, N.Y./LLongwood) made it 5-0 with a two-run single up the middle.following two walks and a Bowdoin error.

Bowdoin chipped away with runs in the second and fourth innings before scoring four times to take a 6-5 lead in the fifth. Three of the runs came after there were two outs and the last two runs were unearned. The loss was charged to Kelsey Gannett (Endwell, N.Y./Union-Endicott), who allowed all six Bowdoin runs -- three of them earned -- on seven hits. Sje struck out seven.in five innings of work. Megan Degroat (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall) pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Degroat earned the start in the circle against St. Lawrence. She gave up a first-inning run before her teammates made it 1-1 in the last of the third. Again, Medina delivered the RBI hit. She, Alyssa Morgan (Homer, N.Y./Homer), and Cherise Gunnell (Falconer, N.Y./Falconer) had two hits each. The Blue Devils had 10 hits as a team and left 10 runners stranded.

St. Lawrence scored two runs in the fifth inning and an insurance run in the seventh.

The Blue Devils are idle until next Friday when they open SUNYAC competition at home against Geneseo.
