Devils rip Ripon for first win of '15

CLERMONT, Fla. -- Fredonia rebounded from a 10-4 loss to Scranton on Monday morning with a 12-2 win over Ripon at the Dot Richardson Spring Games.

Alyssa Morgan (Homer, N.Y./Homer) and Cherise Gunnell (Falconer, N.Y./Falconer) led a 12-hit attack in the win Monday afternoon. Morgan had three hits, four RBI, and two runs scored while Gunnell was three for three. Kate Nicholson (Heuvelton, N.Y./Heuvelton) added two hits and two runs scored.

Megan Degroat (New Windsor, N.Y. / Cornwall) pitched four innings in relief to get her first collegiate win. She allowed four hits and two runs.

Aldyn Carlson (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk) was the Fredonia starter and pitched three scoreless innings. She left the game with a 8-0 lead and was in line for the win before Ripon scored two runs with two outs in the last of the fifth inning to avoid losing by the 8-run mercy rule.

Kaitlyn Crossan (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk) turned in the defensive gem of the game with a back-handed diving catch down the line in left in the first inning. She also made a sliding catch for the final out of the game.

The win, coupled with the loss to Scranton earlier in the day, left the Blue Devils with a 1-5 record this spring. Nicholson had two hits while Gunnell had two RBI against Scranton. Kelsey Gannett (Endwell, N.Y. / Union-Endicott) was the losing pitcher.

The Blue Devils played twice on Tuesday -- 5 p.m. vs. Calvin and 7 p.m. vs. Farleigh Dickinson-Florham.
