CLERMONT, Fla. – Western Connecticut State put Fredonia away with a pair of five-run innings en route a 12-0 victory Saturday morning.
Erin Biskup rapped a pair of two-run singles for the Colonials, who scored five spots in the fourth and sixth innings.
Fredonia managed four hits – never more than one in an inning. The Blue Devils dropped to 0-3 heading into a Saturday afternoon game vs. Heidelberg.
Three of the four Fredonia hits were of the infield variety. Kate Nicholson (Heuvelton, N.Y./Heuvelton) dropped a bunt to lead off the first. Alyssa Morgan (Homer, N.Y. / Homer) beat out a roller to third to lead off the second. Nikki Lent (Yaphank, N.Y. / Longwood) legged out a roller to second with two outs in the third inning. Jess Lauck (Buffalo, N.Y. / Kenmore West) lined to center in the sixth for the last Fredonia hit.
The defensive play of the game was made by Cherise Gunnell (Falconer, N.Y./Falconer) in the third inning. With a Western runner at third and one out, she charged in from first and made a diving back-handed catch of a popped up bunt near the pitching circle.
Megan Degroat (New Windsor, N.Y. / Cornwall) was tagged with the loss. She and reliever Aldyn Carlson (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk) allowed six runs each.
