Blue Devils knock off New England

LAKELAND, FL ---- The Fredonia baseball team continued it's spring trip with a 6-1 win against New England College Saturday afternoon.

Senior Joe Korszun (Schnectady, N.Y./ Mohonassn) took the hill for Fredonia and pitched six innings while giving up six hits, one run, and tallying four strikeouts. Korszun was replaced by Jake Harford (Silver Creek, N.Y./ Silver Creek) who shut the door and earned his first save of the season. Harford did not allow a hit in three innings and recorded four strikeouts

Fredonia struck first in the top of the fouth inning when Ryan Carmody (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley) drove in Quinn Danahy (Buffalo, N.Y./Bishop Timon) who had stolen a base and advanced to third on an errant throw.

The Blue Devils extended the lead to three runs in the top of the fifth. Kenny Johnston (Buffalo, N.Y./ Kenmore West)  brought in Ciro Frontale (Syracuse, N.Y./ Bishop Ludden) on a base hit and moved Ricky Mendiola (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) to third who scored on a Danahy base hit.

New England scored one in the bottom of the sixth trimming the lead to 3-1.

The Blue Devils added an insurance run in the eighth as Michael Carmody (Montgomery, N.Y./ Valley)  singled up the middle scoring pinch runner R.J. Spinella (Cassville, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley).

Fredonia added two more runs in the top of the ninth. Johnston knocked in Bailey Gauthier (Camillus, N.Y./ West Genesee) on a base hit. Johnston later scored from second on an errant throw giving Fredonia a 6-1 lead.  

The Blue Devils had 15 hits, Johnston led the team with three RBI, while Danahy went three for four with an RBI and scored once. Ryan Carmody went three for five with one RBI.

The Blue Devils will be back in action Monday as they take on Maine-Farmington in Lake Wales, Florida at 10 A.M.
