Devil drop pair of close ones

WINTERHAVEN, FL. -- The Fredonia baseball team continued its spring trip with a double header against Ursinus. Fredonia lost the first game 7-6 in extra innings, and dropped the nightcap, 3-2.

In Game 1, starting pitcher Robert Graczyk (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisus) gave up a run in the first. Fredonia responed with a four-run second inning to take a 4-1 lead. The inning was highlighted by Kyle Sherman's three-run double.

Graczyk allowed two more in the second as Ursinus pulled within one, 4-3.

Fredonia extended the lead to 5-3 in the fifth when Mike Prentice (West Seneca, N.Y./St. Francis) doubled and scored Kyle Sherman.

In the bottom of the inning, a bases loaded walk by Fredonia reliever Thomas Morris brought Ursinus within one, 5-4. Joe DiLeo (Williamsville, N.Y./St. Joesph's) replaced Morris. A fielders choice accounted for the tying run. Ursinus then took a 6-5 lead on a wild pitch.

Down a run in the top of the seventh, Sherman led off the inning with a single and stole second on the next pitch. Sherman advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a passed ball to tie the game.

The game would continue extra innings before Ursinus' C.J. Diana knocked in Austin Kurey on a walkoff double in the ninth.

DiLeo took the loss, but had a solid outing, going four-and-a-third innings, striking out six and giving up one run. DiLeo also worked out of jams in the sixth and seventh. Following leadoff triples in both innings, he struck out the side in the sixth, and kept the Bears from capitalizing in the seventh.

Carl Wolf (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) took the hill in game two and pitched six innings giving up five hits, two runs, and struck out six.

Fredonia scored first in the bottom of the second. Mike Carmody (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley) doubled off the wall in his first collegiate at-bat. He was knocked in on an RBI single by Brian Castonguay (Orchard Park, N.Y./Hamburg).

Fredonia held the lead until the sixth when the Bears scored on back-to-back doubles.

Matt Wilhelm (Buffalo, N.Y./Amherst) took the hill in the seventh and allowed one run on an Avery Perez homerun.

Down 3-1 in the seventh, Prentice led off the bottom of the inning with a single and was replaced by pinch runner RJ Spinella (Cassville, N.Y./ Sauquoit Valley). Kenny Johnston (Buffalo / Kenmore West) followed with a double to put the tying ruin at second with no outs. The Devils only mustered one run as Carmody plated Spinella on a sacrifice fly.

Sherman had four hits on the day, and Johnston and Ryan Carmody (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley) had three hits apiece.

Ursinus improved to 8-2.

The Blue Devils (1-3) take on New England tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
