Fredonia honors All American

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Four Devils scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough as the Fredonia women's basketball team dropped an 80-71 decision to visiting Oswego on Friday. Sabrina Macaulay (Newark, N.Y. / Newark) earned her third-straight double-double -- and eighth of the season -- with team highs in points with 17, and rebounds with 10.

Kathryn Halloran (Angola, N.Y. / Immaculata) added 16  points and five rebounds, Alexis Cheatham (Lockport, N.Y. / Lockport) had 12 points and three assists, and Jacque Law (Machias, N.Y. / Pioneer) added 10 points, six rebounds and three assists.

Oswego made the first big move, but the Devils quickly answered back. With Fredonia leading 10-6, Oswego ran off 11 straight points. Fredonia responded with nine straight and nursed a 19-17 lead.

At the 9:34 mark, Halloran connected for a pair of free throws to give the Devils a 21-20 lead. Oswego's Tayler Sorell then knocked down a three and put the Lakers up 23-21. The Lakers would keep the lead the rest of the game.

The Lakers held a 40-33 lead at the break.

The Lakers biggest lead of the second half was 19 points, 69-50, at the 7:41 mark. Fredonia immediately cut the lead to 11 with an 8-0 run. Halloran scored the first bucket, then Macaulay accounted for the game's next six points with a pair of layups and a pair of free throws. Unfortunately, the Devils could not maintain the momentum.

Oswego (4-8 SUNYAC, 6-13 overall) was led by Courtney Ameele with 15 points. Mary Mazzella had 14 points and 14 rebounds, while teammate Rachael Windhausen went for 13 points and 10 boards.

Fredonia falls to 5-8 in conference play and 8-11 overall.

The ladies return to Steele Hall to take on Cortland on Saturday.

NOTES: Prior to the start of the game, Fredonia presented Becky Hebert with her Capital One Academic All-American Team plaque. A 2014 grad, Hebert finished her career as Fredonia's all-time leading scorer and graduated with honors in Math Education. Becky's sister, Heather, a junior at Oswego, was also on hand to share the award with her sister.
