Devils drop OT thriller

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Down by as many as 12 in the second half, the Fredonia women's basketball team rallied back but could not hang on in overtime, dropping a 66-65 decision to Cortland.

Tied at 57, Fredonia scored first in overtime. After winning the tip, Jacque Law (Machias, N.Y. / Pioneer) converted a quick layup. Cortland answered with a three pointer, before Sabrina Macaulay (Newark, N.Y. / Newark) scored the game's next four points to put Fredonia up three, 63-60.

Cortland scored on the next two possessions to re-take the lead, 64-63.

On Fredonia's next possession, Macaulay was fouled under the hoop and coolly sank both free throws for a one-point lead, 65-64.

Cortland's Cassidy Chapko then drove the middle of the lane and connected on a turn-around jumper for what would prove to be the game winner.

The Devils had one last look as Law drove the lane and had her layup attempt rim out right at the buzzer.

For the second straight night, Fredonia had four players in double-digit scoring. Alexis Cheatham (Lockport, N.Y. / Lockport) had 17 and Macaulay had 16 to go with a team-high eight boards. Law came off the bench for 13 and six assists, while Kathryn Halloran (Angola, N.Y. / Immaculata) added 10. Sammy Villarini (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) added five assists and three steals.

Cortland (10-3 SUNYAC, 16-4 overall) was led by Brittany Rando with 16 and Brittney Dumas with 13 and 11 boards.

To start the game, the two teams were even, 13-all, through the first 6:38 of play. Cortland then outscored the Devils 12-1 over the next three minutes to go up 11 points, 25-14.

The Devils used an 8-3 run to close out the first half. Law and Emily Lasher (Wilson, N.Y. / Wilson) each nailed a three and Macaulay converted a layup. They trailed 37-29 at the break.

Cortland would keep the lead until the final 10 seconds. With time winding down, Cheatham drove to her left and converted on a layup to tie the game with 9.8 seconds on the clock, setting up the overtime.

The ladies return to Steele Hall on Tuesday to take on Brockport for a 7:30 tipoff. It will be the team's final home game of the year. They finish out the regular season with three road contests.

NOTES: Fredonia wore pink jerseys during the game in recognition of the Play for Kay initiative. They also collected donations and ran a 50/50 during the contest.
