Buzzer beater beats Devils

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Leading Oneonta by two points with 1:09 remaining, the Fredonia men's basketball team could not hang on as the Red Dragons scored the game's final four points for an 84-82 victory on Friday. Oneonta's Frankie Kelly ran down the clock and then hit the game-winning layup with two seconds left to lift the Red Dragons to victory.

The game featured 11 lead changes and eight ties, and neither team led by more than nine points at any point. Oneonta held a 48-43 lead at the break. The Devils outscored the Red Dragons 39-36 in the second half.

A basket by Oneonta's Lawrence Coleman just over a minute into the second half gave Oneonta its largest lead at 52-43.  Fredonia countered with a 13-3 run to regain the lead, 56-55, on a basket by Max Pearce (Tuckahoe).

A 10-2 run late in the game -- capped by a layup by sophomore Ian Helps (Bronx / Greater New York Academy) -- allowed the Devils to regain the lead, 80-78, with 2:08 remaining.

Fredonia had six players score in double digits. Helps led the way with 16 and Pearce added 14. Robert Lyles (Peekskill) and Kyree Hull (Peekskill) had 13 and 12 respectively. Off the bench, Tommie Banks (Rochester / East) had 11 and Luke Hennessy (Olean) had 10.

Helps was also the top rebounder with 10 and tied for a team-best three assists, as did Lyles.

For the game, the Blue Devils shot 54 percent (32 of 59) from the field, but only 57 percent (13 of 23) from the line. They held a 33-31 advantage in rebounds and connected on five three pointers compared to nine by Oneonta.

Oneonta improves to 12-12 overall and 9-8 in the SUNYAC. Fredonia falls to 2-21 and 1-16.

Fredonia concludes its season tomorrow night at New Paltz.
