Naz shoots past Devils

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Nazareth College used some sharp long-range shooting that included 10 three-pointers to down the Fredonia women's basketball team 62-51 on Tuesday. It was Fredonia's first loss of the season.

Senior Sabrina Macaulay (Newark, N.Y. / Newark) turned in her first double-double in three games with 16 points and 12 rebounds. She added four steals. Freshman Jenna Einink (Mayville, N.Y. / Chautauqua Lake) added 11 points and a pair of blocked shots, while Kathryn Halloran (Angola, N.Y. / Immaculata) had eight points.

Nazareth (3-0) was led by Lindsey Kelly with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Sam Sorge added 14 points, Veronica Peck had 13 points and four assists and Julia Brew had 10 points.

Nazareth outscored Fredonia (2-1) in each of the first three quarters to build a 43-30 lead heading into the final frame. The largest lead came following a three by Sorge, as Naz built a 40-20 lead late in the third. The Devils would finish the third outscroing the Flyers 10-3.

The Devils kept the momentum in the fourth quarter, opening on a 13-5 run to pull within five points, 48-43, following a layup by Einink at the 5:37 mark. The Flyers answered with back-to-back three pointers to regain command of the game.

The Devils would make a final run. Macaulay nailed her first three of the season with 1:10 left to play to make it a seven-point game, 58-51. After a turnover, Alexis Cheatham would fail on a three attempt, and the Devils would then foul to slow the game. Nazareth made all four free-throw attempts to close out the contest.

Nazareth would go 10 of 20 from three-point land, while the Devils shot two of 11. The Flyers also controlled the boards with  a 52-34 advantage in rebounds. Defensively, Fredonia registered 12 steals to Naz's four, while the Flyers committed 18 turnovers to Fredonia's 12.

Offensively, Fredonia had its opportunities, but shot only 31 percent from the field. They did hit on 13 of 19 free throws (68 percent). Nazareth was 33 percent from the floor and 83 percent (10 of 12) from the line.

Next up for the Devils is Alfred University on Dec. 1st in Steele Hall. The women play host to the Saxons at 5:30 and the men tip off at 7:30.
