FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia men's and women's basketball teams will play host to Plattsburgh and Potsdam this weekend in Steele Hall. On Friday, the men tip off at 5:30, and the women at 7:30. Saturday's games are at 2:00 and 4:00 against the Bears of Potsdam.
Both the men's and women's teams put together solid efforts against Geneseo on Tuesday, and both fell just short down the stretch. The men's team, was tied late, 53-all, against the Knights before surrendering a 15-2 run to end the game with a 68-55 loss. The women closed within three points in the final minute before dropping a 61-56 decision.
The men feature three players averaging double digits in scoring. Freshman
Ian Helps (13.4 ppg) and juniors
Robert Lyles (10.3) and
Kyree Hull (10.3) lead a balanced attack. On Tuesday, junior
Bayron Carter had a season-high 13 points to lead the Devils. The young team -- there are no seniors and only three returnees -- have shown steady improvement in challenging Geneseo who is traditionally near the top of the SUNYAC standings.
Plattsburgh enters the weekend at 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the SUNYAC. Potsdam (1-7, 0-2) takes on Buffalo State Friday before traveling to Fredonia on Saturday.
For the Fredonia women, junior
Sabrina Macaulay and freshman
Jacque Law provided the offense Tuesday with 14 points apiece. It was the Law's first career start.
Sammy Villarini also turned in a solid effort running the point. She had nine points and six assists. The junior missed the first six games of the season, and has brought a great deal of energy to the lineup the past three games. Sophomore
Alexis Cheatham is averaging 14.0 ppg, and has missed the past few contests.
The Plattsburgh women enter the contest at 5-4 overall and 2-0 in the SUNYAC. Potsdam has a 1-7 and 0-2 ledger entering the weekend.
