Devils' rally falls short

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia women's basketball team made a late run in a close game, but Geneseo held on for a 61-56 victory in Steele Hall on Tuesday.

A layup by Sabrina Macaulay (Newark, N.Y. / Newark)) in the final minute brought Fredonia within one possession of Geneseo, 59-56, but the Devils could not muster enough down the stretch to overcome the Knights.

Macaulay and Jacque Law (Machias, N.Y. / Pioneer) each scored 14 points, and Sammy Villarini (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) added nine points and six assists. Jamie Curry (Ransomville, N.Y. / Wilson) added six points and five assists, while Marissa Cussins (Corning, N.Y. / Painted Post West) provided five steals on defense.

Geneseo had three players in double-digit scoring, with Shannon Macginnis and Dana Cohen each collecting 15 markers.

The game was close throughout, with the largest lead of eight points coming as Geneseo held a 59-51 lead down the stretch. The Devils battled back with the next five points, but could not get over the hurdle.

The Devils' largest lead was three points, 35-32, coming six minutes into the second half.

The Devils shot well from the field -- 23 of 48 (48 percent) -- and connected on seven three pointers in 16 attempts (43 percent). However, they only made five trips to the foul line, connecting three times.

Geneseo (5-3 overall, 1-0 SUNYAC) shot 41 percent from the field, and hit on five long-range buckets. They would only go to the charity stripe nine times, connecting on six of those opportunities.

Fredonia falls to 3-6 overall and 0-3 in the SUNYAC. The Devils return to Steele Hall this weekend to take on Plattsburgh on Friday, and Potsdam on Saturday.
