Devils roll over Southern New Hampshire

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia's first-ever meeting with Southern New Hampshire ended up decidedly in the Blue Devils' favor, 7-1, in men's hockey at Steele Hall.

Blake Forslund (Owen Sound, Ont.) scored twice for Fredonia, his first two goals of the season, while Damien Kulynych (Calgary, Alberta) had one goal and two assists.

Fredonia goaltender Jeff Flagler (Owen Sound, Ont.) made 21 saves and came within 31.2 seconds of pitching his first shutout of the season.

The win lifted the Blue Devils to 3-5-3 while Southern New Hampshire fell to 5-7-0.

The line of Marcus Anderson (Örnsköldsvik, Sweden), centering between Kulynych and Hunter Long (Lebanon, Tenn.), combined for five points in the first period. Kulynych opened the scoring with a shot from the right circle after a cross-ice feed from Long. Andersson made it 2-0 with a shot from in front of the net following a flurry of shots by Kulynych, which were stopped. Marcus Ortiz (Richardson, Texas) made it 3-0 with a backhander after skating up the left wing.

Forslund added to the Fredonia lead with the only goal of the second period, an innocent shot from between the faceoff circles which glanced off and under the crossbar.

The Blue Devils poured it on with three more goals in the third period. Stephen Castriota (Bellport, N.Y.) scored on a slapshot from between the circles, Forslund converted on a scramble in front of the net, and Frankie Hart (Timmins, Ont.) closed the scoring with a quick move up ice following a steal and pass by Ortiz.

In all, 11 of the 12 Fredonia forwards had at least one point, plus one each by two defensemen.

A power-play goal by Jim Gabrione at 19:29 of the third period accounted for the Southern New Hampshire goal.

The Blue Devils outshot the Penmen, 52-22, as goaltender Ryan Slatky making 45 saves.

Fredonia is on the road for two games this weekend at Neumann, 7 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday.
