ASTON, Pa. -- Fredonia recorded its most significant win so far this season by defeating host Neumann, 4-2, in men's non-conference hockey.
The Blue Devils scored three times in the third period to break a 1-1 tie and win for the second time this week and the third straight time dating back to December.
Cory Melkert (North Bay, Ont.) and Jared Wynia (Calgary, Alberta) led the Fredonia attack. Each scored their first goal of the season to go along with an assist.
Melkert's goal into an empty net came with 1:06 left while the Blue Devils were skating short-handed. It was just the second goal in 77 college games for the Blue Devil senior defenseman and team captain. In addition, the two points give him 10 in his college career.
Mitch Kaufmann (Red Deer, Alberta) also scored for the first time this season while
Marcus Ortiz (Richardson, Texas) netted his third goal. The goal by Kaufmann, at 10:43 of the third period, was recorded as the game-winner.
Jeff Flagler (Owen Sound, Ont.) made 39 saves to pick up the win in net for Fredonia.
After a scoreless first period, Wynia gave Fredonia a shortlived 1-0 lead before Neumann's Shayne Morrissey countered to forge a 1-1 tie. Ortiz put the Blue Devils ahead to stay at 6:48 of the third period, followed by the Kaufmann and Melkert goals. Neumann's Jory Mullin completed the scoring at 19:30 while his team was on a power play in addition to skating with an extra attacker.
Fredonia improved to 4-5-3 overall while Neuman fell to 7-4-2. The Knights received votes in this week's USCHO.com poll.
The teams meet again 3 p.m. Saturday.Â
