Geneseo outlasts Devils

FREDONIA, N.Y. --  The Fredonia men's basketball team led 31-28 at the half and were tied 53-all with just over seven minutes to play, but stalled offensively as they fell to Geneseo, 68-55, in Steele Hall on Tuesday.

Geneseo (5-3, 1-0 SUNYAC) would close out the game with a 15-2 run. 

For Fredonia, Bayron Carter (Peekskill, N.Y. / Peekskill) came off the bench to lead the team with 13 points. Robert Lyles (Peekskill, N.Y. / Peekskill) added nine points and five assists. Ian Helps (Bronx, N.Y. / Greater New York Academy) was the top rebounder with nine to go along with six points, and Tommie Banks (Rochester, N.Y. / East) had eight points and eight rebounds.

The Devils came out strong early in the game, with their biggest lead of eight coming at the 8:16 mark, up 24-16. The lead would hold up until the start of the second half. Geneseo came out of the locker room, and nailed a three pointer and a layup to take a 33-31 lead.

The Devils would eventually tie the game at 53 before Geneseo went on its final run.

Geneseo was led by Gordon Lyons with 26 points and 12 rebounds and Andy Drescher with 19 points.

Geneseo held a slight rebounding edge, 40-38, while the Devils had an 11-10 advantage in assists. The Devils were hampered by four of 13 shooting (31 percent) from the free-throw line. Geneseo shot 47 percent from the field, compared to Fredonia's 34 percent.

Fredonia falls to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in the SUNYAC. The Devils return to Steele Hall this weekend to take on Plattsburgh on Friday, and Potsdam on Saturday.
