Hot first half does not hold up

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia shot 56 percent in the first half to jump out to a 31-27 lead at the break, then cooled off in the second half, falling to Plattsburgh, 67-58, in SUNYAC men's basketball.

The strong first period was spurred on by 13 points from Kyree Hull (Peekskill, N.Y. / Peekskill), who shot six of six from the field, including a three-pointer. The Devils shot 14 of 25, while Plattsburgh converted on 10 of 34 shots (29 percent).

Plattsburgh scored first on a free throw by Reggie WIlliams. The Devils responded with a three from Bayron Carter (Peekskill, N.Y. / Peekskill) and would maintain the lead the entire half. Their largest lead was 25-17 with six minutes left in the first half.

Plattsburgh came out strong the second half. With the Devils up 38-37 at the 13:58 mark, a Kyle Richardson three-pointer gave the Cardinals their first lead since the opening minutes. 

Plattsburgh extended its lead with a 10-2 run midway through the second half. Leading 44-42 at the 12:22 mark, they used the run to mount a 54-44 lead with just over six minutes left.

The Cardinals led by as many as 14 points, 60-46, at the 4:18 mark. From there, Fredonia went on a 12-3 run to pull within five points, 63-58, with just inder two minutes to play, yet could get no closer.

The rebounding battle went to Plattsburgh, 45-37.

Fredonia was led by Hull with 15 points and Carter with 14. Ian Helps (Bronx, N.Y. / Greater New York Academy) added eight points and 10 rebounds.

Plattsburgh (2-1, 7-3 SUNYAC) had three players with 15 points each -- Williams, Shamoy McIntosh and Edward Correa.

Fredonia (1-7, 0-4) is scheduled to take on Potsdam Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Steele Hall Fieldhouse.
