BOXSCORE BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Fredonia men's basketball team was up by as many as 20 points in the first half, but allowed the host Medaille Mavericks to rally early in the second half and eventually earn an 85-75 victory.
Up 49-34 at halftime, Fredonia allowed the Mavericks to score 11 straight to open the second half. With just under 11 minutes left to play, a jumper by Medaille's Ryan Grandits gave the Mavs their first lead, 57-56, since early in the game.
The Devils kept it close until the closing minute. Following a three-point play by
Ian Helps (Bronx, N.Y. / Greater New York Academy)Â
with 1:12 on the clock, the Devils were within two, 77-75. Medaille scored the game's final eight points -- going eight of 10 from the free-throw line -- in the last 50 seconds of play.
Helps scored a season-high 24 points and had a team-high nine rebounds.
Kyree Hull (Peekskill, N.Y. / Peekskill) had 11 points and
Max Pearce (Tuckahoe, N.Y. / Tuckahoe) had 10.
Robert Lyles (Peekskill, N.Y. / Peekskill) had five assists.
Medaille (12-5) was led by Jammal Coleman with 30 points.
Fredonia held a 35-32 edge in rebounds and shot 46 percent from the field compared to Medaille's 47 percent. Medaille nailed eight three pointers to the Devils five.
Fredonia (1-14) returns to SUNYAC action, traveling to Potsdam and Plattsburgh this weekend.
