Devils unable to answer at Brockport

BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- Fredonia fell to Brockport, 2-1, in SUNYAC women's soccer Saturday to complete a weekend split.

The Blue Devils (3-5 overall/1-1 SUNYAC) defeated Geneseo, 2-1, with two second-half goals on Friday, yet were unable to come up with an answer in the second half Saturday.

The teams exchanged goals in the first half, with Brockport scoring first and last for a 2-1 lead. Cayli Carmona put the Golden Eagles up 1-0 with her sixth goal of the season in the 11th minute. Fredonia sophomore Kaleigh Creeden (Rock Tavern, N.Y./Washingtonville) evened the score for the Blue Devils in the 28th minute when she dribbled in, shot, and scored her first collegiate goal. The tie was shortlived. Chelsea Stahl, from Courtney Szczesniak, put Brockport back on top, 2-1, in the 29th minute. It was also Stahl's sixth goal of the season.

That completed the scoring -- although neither team knew it at the time. The Blue Devils were not without chances. They outshot the Golden Eagles, 16-14, and had a 4-2 advantage in corners kicks. The final corner, by freshman Audrey Yokopovich (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas), resulted in a shot by sophomore Jenna Smolinski (Hamburg, ,N.Y./Hamburg), which sailed wide.

Brockport goalkeeper Laura Thompson finished with five saves, while Fredonia junior Lindsey Forness (Allegany, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) made five stops one day after recording 17 saves against Geneseo.

Fredonia returns to action Tuesday at Elmira before resuming SUNYAC play next Saturday at Buffalo State.
