Solid stops, late goal lift Devils

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Strong play from Fredonia goalkeeper Lindsey Forness (Allegany, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) and a late goal gave the Blue Devils a 1-0 conference win over Buffalo State on a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon at Coyer Field.

Forness finished six saves while Kaleigh Creeden (Rock Tavern, N.Y./Washingtonville) recorded her second goal of the season and her first game-winner as the Blue Devils improved to 4-5 overall and 2-1 in the SUNYAC. The loss dropped the Bengals to 4-5-2 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

Conditions proved to be tough, yet both teams battled through them. The Buffalo State defense played strong in the first half, helping to keep things tied despite six shots from Fredonia in the first 22 minutes of play.

Nearing the end of the first half, Buffalo State freshman Breanna Knight (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream) nearly gave the Bengals the lead, yet her shot hit the cross bar and bounced out. Just over three minutes later Knight had another shot, but this time Forness came up with a big save.

The Bengals started off the second half with an offensive push. Freshman Victoria Colotti (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free) fired off two quick shots in the first three minutes, but both times Forness managed the save.

Fredonia continued to pressure the Buffalo State defense. Nicole Torres (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) had a big save for the Bengals, keeping things tied up heading into the 60th minute of play.

The Blue Devils racked up corner kicks in the second half and managed to take advantage on one of their nine chances. At 75:25, Creeden got a foot on the ball to score and put the Blue Devils up 1-0. Alexis Moreland (Newfane, N.Y./Newfane) and Maggie Horan (Livonia, N.Y./Livonia) were credited with assists.

Knight tallied two more shots with 10 minutes to play in regulation, but once again Forness was there for the save.

The Bengals nearly tied things up with just 3:30 on the clock, but the goalkeeper took out Gina Taggart (Chester, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) before she had a chance to shoot. Tianna Hatch got the ball before the goalkeeper could, but her shot sailed wide of the net.

Fredonia held a 14-8 advantage in total shots, as well as a large 12-1 margin in corner kicks. Both teams finished with six shots on goal.

Torres recorded the loss in net for the Bengals with five saves.

Fredonia's win gives them two points in the "Battle by the Lake" contest, giving the Blue Devils the early 5-1 lead.  For more information, CLICK HERE.
