CORTLAND, N.Y. -- A big second-half surge carried Cortland over Fredonia, 68-49, in SUNYAC women's basketball Saturday afternoon.
Down 38-37 with just under 17 minutes left, the Blue Devils were outscored 19-0 over the next five minutes. They fell to 0-2 in the SUNYAC, 2-4 overall.
Sabrina Macaulay (Newark, N.Y./Newark) led the Fredonia offense with 18 points -- on 8 of 14 shooting -- and 10 rebounds. It was her third double-double of the season. She is averaging 13.8 points and 9.7 rebounds per game.
Jamie Curry (Ramsonville, N.Y./Wilson) added 10 points. She had 17 points Friday at Oswego and 15 points Tuesday at Alfred.
Up by three points, 4-1, in the early going, the Blue Devils traded baskets with the Red Dragons most of the first half, which ended with Cortland leading 34-30. The Red Dragons opened a 38-30 lead in the second half, followed by a 7-0 Fredonia run. It included a free throw by
Kaylyn Billups (Buffalo, N.Y./Charter School for Applied Technology), a three-point play by Macaulay, and a three-point basket by Currry.
Cortland countered with its decisive 19-0 run.
Brittney Dumas had 26 points, 14 rebounds, three assists, and four blocked shots to lead Cortland. Cassidy Chapko added 16 points. The Red Dragons improved to 2-0 in the conference, 6-1 overall.
The Blue Devils are idle until next Sunday, when they entertain St. John Fisher at 6 p.m. in the Steele Hall Fieldhouse.
