CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Fredonia's early-season struggles continued Saturday with a 75-60 SUNYAC loss at Cortland in men's basketball.
The loss dropped the Blue Devils to 1-4 overall -- 0-3 in the conference. Cortland remained unbeaten at 6-0 overall and 2-0 SUNYAC.
Fredonia held early leads of four points. Its first was at 4-0 on a basket off the opening tip by
Robert Lyles (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill), followed by two free throws by Lyles later in the first minute of action.
A layup by
Tremaine Shelton (Buffalo, N.Y./Academy for Visual and Performing Arts) put Fredonia ahead 14-10 with 12:52 left in the first half. The Red Dragons then took command with a 13-0 run en route to a 39-23 lead at halftime.
Cortland maintained a double-digit advantage the entire second half.
Max Pearce (Tuckahoe, N.Y./Tuckahoe) came off the Fredonia bench to lead the team in scoring -- 12 points on 5 of 7 shooting.
Bayron Carter (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) led the Blue Devils with nine rebounds. He also had five points, three assists, one blocked shot, and one steal.
Blair Estarfaa and Lamard Herron led Cortland with 15 points and 14 points, respectively.
Fredonia will look to turn things around when it closes out the first semester at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Penn State-Behrend. It's the first home game this season for the men.
