OSWEGO, N.Y. -- Fredonia opened its SUNYAC season with a 63-62 loss Friday at Oswego.
Ian Helps (Bronx, N.Y./Greater New York Academy) had 18 points -- on 8 of 13 shooting -- and 10 rebounds to lead Fredonia in both categories.
Robert Lyles (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) had 13 points, six assists, and three steals.
Kyree Hull (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) added 12 points and
Bayron Carter (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) had 11 points.
Down by 10 points in the first half, the Blue Devils -- 1-3 overall -- cut their deficit in half, 37-32, at halftime. They pulled even 41-41 on a three-point basket by Carter and grabbed their first lead of the second half, 57-55, on a layup by Helps.
The teams were tied 59-all when Lyles knocked down a three-pointer with 1:42 left. Oswego closed out the game with a jumper by Brian Sortino and a rebound basket by Rayshawn Powell, the latter with 21 seconds left.
Fredonia had two more chances at the end, yet a jumper by
Alexander Grace (Bemus Point, N.Y/Maple Grove) with :06 left and a last-second three by Lyles as time expired missed the mark.
The win lifted Oswego to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the SUNYAC.
The Blue Devils are back in action 2 p.m. Saturday at Cortland.
