Big second half carries Medaille over Devils

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia dropped to 1-2 with a 76-69 non-conference loss Tuesday to Medaille in the Blue Devils' women's basketball home opener at Steele Hall.

The Blue Devils led 33-29 at halftime, yet could not withstand a second-half scoring onslaught by the Mavericks (1-0).

A three-point basket by MarceAnne Dunning put the Mavericks on top for good, 50-47, with 9:33 left.

Dunning, with 15 points, was one of four Mavericks to score in double figures. Kristie Dlugosz led the way with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Morgan Howe finished with 17 and 12 rebounds, while Alicia Montalvo added 12 points for the Mavericks, who shot 19 of 43 in the second half (44.2 percent).

Conversely, the Blue Devils were 11 of 42 from the field in the second half (26.2 percent). They were led in scoring by sophomore guard Alexis Cheatham (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) 17 points to go along with a team-high five assists.

Junior forward Sabrina Macaulay (Newark, N.Y./Newark) had her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 14 rebounds, while senior guard Marissa Cussins (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post West) added 10 points.

Fredonia is idle until next Tuesday when they visit Alfred University.
