Devils open season with win at Alfred State

ALFRED, N.Y. -- Fredonia broke out to an early lead and built on it during a 75-64 women's basketball win Saturday afternoon over the Alfred State Pioneers.

Sophomore guard Alexis Cheatham (Lockport, N.Y. / Lockport), the reigning SUNYAC Rookie of the Year, began the 2014-15 season with a team-high 23 points, including 5 of 8 on three-pointers. She was 7 of 10 overall from the field and was Fredonia's top playmaker with five assists.

The other four Fredonia starters combined for 38 points and 31 rebounds, led by junior forward Sabrina Macaulay (Newark N.Y. / Newark) with a double-double -- 13 points and 14 rebounds. Macaulay also had five shot blocks. Sophomore guard-forward Jamie Curry (Ransomville, N.Y. / Wilson) added 11 points and six rebounds, while senior guard-forward Kaylyn Billups (Buffalo, N.Y. / Charter School for Applied Technology) and junior center-forward Katie Devine (Clarence, N.Y. / Clarence) had seven points each.

All five Fredonia starters were 22 of 43 from the field. The reserves were 3 of 16 from the field and 8 of 9 from the foul line.

The teams traded baskets in the opening seconds before the Blue Devils took a 4-2 lead on a lay-up by Cheatham. It was the start of a 10-0 run from which Alfred State was unable to recover.

The Blue Devils have two more road games next week -- Tuesday at Pitt-Bradford, next Saturday at Nazareth. They open the home portion of their season Nov. 25 vs. Medaille.
