ALFRED, N.Y. -- Fredonia men's soccer earned at least one point for the eighth straight time with a 2-2 double-overtime tie Tuesday with the Alfred Saxons.
Goals by
Ryan Keller (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) and
Ryan Ross (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) accounted for the Blue Devil scoring. Nicholas Milliman and Jeff Thomas scored for the Saxons. Thomas's goal tied the game with 2:04 left in regulation.
Sammy Torrelli (Akron, N.Y./Akron) made fours saves for the Blue Devils, who have a 5-0-3 record in their last eight games. They are 7-1-3 overall and 6-0-1 vs. non-conference opponents. The Saxons ended the night 6-4-1 overall.
Each team scored off a long clearing play and each scored on a penalty kick.
Alfred led 1-0 when Milliman scored in the 56th minute when he one-timed a short rebound. Torrelli had just made a save of shot by a Saxon completing a run up the right wing. The play was set in motion with a long through pass along the right sideline.
Keller's penalty kick in the 67th minute was his third goal of the season and forged a 1-1 tie. After geting Alfred goalkeeper Chris Gutierrez to move to his right, Keller fired a low hard shot into the opposite corner.
Ross put the Blue Devils on top 2-1 in the 79th minute with his third goal of the season. The scoring play began deep in the Fredonia defensive end when the ball was cleared high and far into the center circle. A Fredonia player gained possession, dribbled to his right, then reversed the ball by touching off to Ross streaking down the left wing.
Ross waited until Gutierrez came off his line before shooting and scoring from a wide angle.
A foul in the box by the Blue Devils led to the game-tying penalty kick by Thomas, a low shot into the left corner.
The Blue Devils will embark on a road trip this weekend -- Friday at Oswego, Saturday at Cortland. Game times are 4 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
