Devils hold off Bengals for 1-1 tie

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia scored first yet Buffalo State rallied and was coming hard at the end in an eventual 1-1 SUNYAC men's soccer tie Saturday at University Stadium.

Blue Devil sophomore goalkeeper Sammy Torrelli (Akron, N.Y./Akron) stopped Buffalo State's Joe Vucic (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) with 1:39 left to preserve the deadlock and keep the Bengals from coming away with a road win.

Torrelli finished with eight saves, including two other key stops, while freshman Aaron Hayes (Hamburg, N.Y./St. Francis) tallied the Fredonia goal, his first as a collegian. Matt Wong (Coventry, England/Binswood Sixth Form) had the Buffalo State goal.

The Blue Devils (7-1-2 overall, 1-0-2 SUNYAC) broke on top in the 18th minute on a header by Hayes following a cross into the box by Vinny Chimento (Akron, N.Y./Akron). It was Chimento's team-leading third assist of the season.

Buffalo State threatened a short while later, only to have Torrelli make a diving stop of a shot by Tristan Myers (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas), who was free in the box near the right post.

Torrelli was at it again in the 75th minute with a leaping stop of a shot by Vucic, yet it was only a matter of seconds before the Bengals were on the board. Torrelli's save set up a corner kick taken by Myers. The ball sailed across the goal mouth to the opposite side, where Vucic played a cross back into the box. Wong converted from close range for his first goal of the season. It Vucic's first assist to go along with his team-leading eight goals.

Hunter Hein (East Amherst, N.Y./Clarence) had five saves for the Bengals (2-7-1 overall, 0-2-1 SUNYAC), who outshot the Blue Devils 24-16. Conversely, the Blue Devils had a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Torrelli's acrobatics were also display during the post-game shootout, held for SUNYAC tiebreaking purposes, when he stopped all three Bengal shooters, while the Blue Devils made all three attempts.

Each team earned a point for its school in the "Battle of the Lake" series.
