FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia and Cortland opened their respective seasons with a 2-2 overtime tie Friday in SUNYAC men's hockey.
Zach White (Taberg, N.Y.) and
Stephen Castriota (Bellport, N.Y.) had the Fredonia goals. Tommy Nolan (Mahopac, N.Y.) and Dan Broderick (White Plains, N.Y.) scored for Cortland.
Fredonia took a 1-0 lead on the goal by White as his shot from the high right point deflected off the glove of Cortland goaltender Drew Weigman (Annapolis, Md.).
Taylor Bourne (Calgary, Alberta) set up White with a pass from behind the net.
Cortland pulled even later in the period as Nolan converted a Fredonia neutral-zone turnover with a shot from the top of the right circle. Darren McCormick (West Seneca, N.Y.) assisted with a pass from behind Blue Devil goaltender

Cortland grabbed a 2-1 lead early in the second period as Broderick scored following a scrum in front of the net. Josh LaRose (Liverpool, N.Y.) brought the puck up the left sideboards, passed to Nick Zappia (Manlius, N.Y..) behind the net, and Zappia set up Broderick.
Fredonia pulled even 2-2 as Castriota scored as a result of a 2-on-1 rush with
Brian Doust (Calgary, Alberta) after
Jared Wynia (Calgary, Alberta) chipped the puck ahead. Doust skated along the left boards before passing to Castriota in front of the net.
Flagler finished with 26 saves while Weigman had 44 saves and earned the No. 3 star.
White and Castriota earned the No. 1 and No. 2 stars, respectively.
The Blue Devils are back in action Saturday night when the take on No. 3 ranked Oswego at 7 p.m. in the Steele Hall Ice Arena.
