ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Fredonia's bid to make the SUNYAC Tournament in men's soccer will come down to its Saturday afternoon road game at New Paltz.
And even then, a Fredonia win might not be enough.
That's because the Blue Devils -- 8-5-3 overall and 2-4-2 in the conference -- fell Friday to Oneonta, 3-0, an outcome that was better than at first glance.
The Red Dragons (14-0-2 overall, 7-0-1 SUNYAC) are ranked No. 4 in the nation and No. 1 in the NCAA Division III East poll. Three goals by Cory Santangelo accounted for all of Oneonta's scoring.
Santangelo scored in the 42nd, 47th, and 51st minute -- a span of nine minutes which stretched across halftime.
"We played a really solid game," Blue Devil head coach
P.J. Gondek said, "except for the span at the end of the first half and the beginning of the second. A team like this will punish you when you lose concentration."
Vincent Pelligrino made two saves to earn the shutout while
Michael Schreiner (Spencerport, N.Y./Spencerport) stopped six shots in the Fredonia goal.
If order to make the conference tournament, the Blue Devils need to defeat New Paltz -- 1 p.m. kickoff Saturday -- and hope that Cortland defeats Oswego, and either Plattsburgh or Potsdam lose.
"We are still in the hunt," Gondek said, "and we can only control what we can control with a win over New Paltz."
The Hawks will bring an 0-6-2 conference record into the game with Fredonia. They tied Friday with Buffalo State, 1-1.
