NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- Fredonia's bid to stay alive for a SUNYAC Tournament spot was thwarted Saturday as New Paltz claimed a 4-1 SUNYAC men's soccer victory over the Blue Devils.
The loss dropped Fredonia to 8-6-3 overall and 2-5-2 in the conference. New Paltz -- which also finished out of the SUNYAC Tournament field -- improved to 5-11-2 overall and 1-6-2 in SUNYAC.
Jason Gonzalez had three goals and one assist to lead the Hawks.
Aaron Hayes (Hamburg, N.Y./St. Francis) scored the lone Fredonia goal. It came in the 74th minute to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Sam DeFranks (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore West) was credited with an assist.
The Blue Devils needed a win and some help to make the SUNYAC Tournament, which begins next weekend. Instead, they will close out their 2014 season with a home game 7 p.m. Tuesday vs. Hobart.
