PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- The Fredonia Blue Devils women's soccer team took an eight-hour bus ride to get to Plattsburgh on Thursday. Just over a minute into their game on Friday evening,
Alexis Moreland's fourth goal of the season was all the scoring that would take place, and propelled the Devils to a 1-0 victory over the host Cardinals.
On a
Katie Kleine (Cazenovia, N.Y. / Cazenovia) cross, Moreland (Newfane, N.Y. / Newfane) touched the ball just over the keeper's head for the game-winning goal. It was Kleine's third assist of the season.
From there, the Blue Devil defense held tight. Plattsburgh managed to get off 19 shots to the Devils' 10, but goaltender
Lindsey Forness (Limestone, N.Y. / Allegany-Limestone) stopped all six shots that were on goal to earn her fourth shutout this season.
Plattsburgh's Danielle Schmitt was credited with three saves in the loss. The Cardinals held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Both teams entered the game with identical conference records of 2-2-1, so the victory was key to the Devils' playoff hopes. Plattsburgh dropped to 2-3-1 in the SUNYAC and 6-6-1 overall.
Fredonia, now 3-2-1 in the SUNYAC and 6-6-1 overall, takes on 0-6 Potsdam on Saturday with a chance to continue their ascension in the SUNYAC standings.
