FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Cortland's Danielle Tyrrell (Vestel, N.Y./Vestel) scored all three goals to propel the Red Dragons to a 3-0 SUNYAC women's soccer victory over Fredonia on Saturday afternoon at University Stadium.
The teams were in a scoreless stalemate until Tyrrell's first goal in the 19th minute. It was proceeded by a Blue Devil turnover in the midfield. She dribbled around a defender and fired a high, hard shot over the head of Blue Devil goalkeeper
Lindsey Forness (Allegany, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone).
Until then, Fredonia had a best scoring chance -- a point-blank shot by
Katie Kleine (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) which Cortland goalkeeper Renee Walker (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) came off her line to stop.
Tyrrell's second goal came in the 27th minute, a close-range shot following a long through pass by Rachel Parker (Marathon, N.Y./Marathon).
Tyrrell completed the hattrick with a header in the box directly off a corner kick by Amanda Margolis (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside). The goal, in the 68th minute, was Tyrrell's fourth of the season.
Walker finished with four saves to earn the shutout for Cortland, Forness made eight saves for Fredonia.
The Blue Devils fell to 2-2-1 in the SUNYAC and 5-6-1 overall. Cortland improved to a 4-1-1 in the SUNYAC, tops in the SUNYAC, and 5-6-1 overall.
Next up for Fredonia is a journey to North Country for games next Friday at Plattsburgh and next Saturday at Potsdam.
