Matthew Johnson was appointed head coach of the Fredonia Blue Devils women’s tennis team in July 2018.

Johnson led the women to a SUNYAC semi-final appearance in 2018, with a 12-4 record (4-3 conference), a new school record for wins in a season. In addition, several student-athletes on the 2018 roster established a bevy of career and single-season individual and doubles records under his guidance.

Johnson graduated from Berry College in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. He also completed Berry's Professional Tennis Management curriculum. Johnson currently holds certification as a professional by the United States Professional Tennis Association and as a performance coach by the Professional Tennis Registry.

Johnson was a member of the Berry College tennis team from 2016-2018 and the Penn State Behrend tennis squad in 2015. In his final year at Berry College, Johnson finished with a 4-3 record in singles, and a 7-6 record in doubles. Johnson was awarded International Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete and Southern-Athletic Association Academic Honor Roll at Berry College and All-Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Second Team at Penn State Behrend.

Johnson continues to develop and teach youth tennis players during the summer months at his local YMCA in Lakewood as the assistant head tennis professional and at Chautauqua Institution as a tennis instructor.
