R.J. Gicewicz, men's hockey assistanta coach

R.J. Gicewicz

R.J. Gicewicz was named Fredonia men's hockey assistant coach, beginning with the 2019-20 season.

A graduate of St. Lawrence University, Gicewicz was forced to quit playing college hockey in 2017 due to an injury but was asked to stay on by his coaches as a student assistant coach and team manager. He held the position for two seasons before graduating in May 2019 with a bachelor's of science in Psychology and a bachelor's of arts in Liberal Arts. He was the 2017-18 and 2018-19 winner of the Terry Slater Perseverance Award, presented to the player who, when facing a significant personal challenge, performed with distinction and conducted himself with grace.

In addition to his undergraduate coaching duties at St. Lawrence, Gicewicz served as an on-ice instructor at the Buffalo Sabres Youth Camp, on the staff of the Jim Kelly Football Camp, and as an assistant at SAQ Performance, working with youth, high school, and college athletes as a mentor. He is a graduate of Nichols School in Buffalo, N.Y., where he was assistant captain, a gold medalist of the USA Hockey National Select Team, and a participant of the USA Hockey National Select Team. Prior to attending St. Lawrence, he played with the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League.

Gicewicz succeeded Reid Lesswing, who joined the Plattsburgh State coaching staff of recent hire Steve Moffat. Lesswing served as Meredith's assistant coach during the 2018-19 season.
