FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia women's tennis earned its first win of the fall Tuesday evening at Steele Hall Courts, edging Houghton 4–3 behind a decisive lower‑line singles sweep and strong production in the middle and bottom doubles flights. The Blue Devils moved to 1–1 on the season, responding well after dropping the top doubles match and the top three singles courts.
Houghton opened with a 6–0 win at No. 1 doubles, but Fredonia quickly countered. Allison Bartoszek and Rylyn Tunstall secured a 7–5 victory at No. 2, and Emily Solazzo and Taylyn Stanton followed with a 6–0 shutout at No. 3 to give the Blue Devils a 2–1 lead heading into singles. That early depth proved critical as the match tightened.
The Highlanders surged back by sweeping the top half of the singles ladder. Straight‑set wins at Nos. 1, 2, and 3 briefly pushed Houghton ahead 3–2, shifting the pressure to Fredonia's lower flights. The Blue Devils answered immediately, beginning with Solazzo's composed 6–4, 6–0 win at No. 4 to even the match.
Stanton recorded a dominant 6–0, 6–0 performance at No. 6, bring the score to 3-3 with one match left. Fredonia securred the match at No. 5 singles whhen Amelia Stathatos rallied from a tight first set to defeat Prashansa Chakrapani 7–5, 6–0.
The trio of Solazzo, Stathatos, and Stanton combined to drop just four games across six sets.
Fredonia State is back in action Thursday at Franciscan in Steubenville, Ohio.
