FREDONIA, N.Y. — Fredonia State pounded out 28 hits and 22 runs and got two complete games in the circle to sweep Plattsburgh, 14–3 (5 inn.) and 8–1, in a SUNYAC doubleheader Friday at Blue Devil Field. The Blue Devils clinched a playoff spot as they improved to 16–20 overall, 10–6 SUNYAC heading into Saturday's regular‑season doubleheader vs. Potsdam.
Fredonia State's offense was relentless, finishing with nine doubles and a home run. Madison DeVore led the way, going 6‑for‑7 with four runs scored, three doubles and two stolen bases.
In Game 1, the Blue Devils jumped on Plattsburgh with four runs in the first inning. After DeVore was hit by a pitch and Kayla Lynn bunted for a single, both advanced on steals. A wild pitch brought in the first run, Chloe Whittingham singled to right to make it 2–0, and Kirsten Lajewski ripped a two‑run double to right‑center for a 4–0 lead.
The Blue Devils added six more in the second, highlighted by RBI doubles from Avery Hill and Lajewski and run‑scoring singles from Whittingham and Mia Eickhoff. Hill doubled again in the third and DeVore added an RBI infield hit in the fourth to reach the 14–3 final. Phillips (10–8) earned the win with a five‑inning complete game, allowing four hits and striking out five.
In Game 2, Fredonia struck early again. DeVore doubled and scored on a single by Arianna Lerouzes in the first, then the Blue Devils added three in the second on consecutive singles by Lajewski, Angelique Palacio, and Kim Dorane, followed by RBI hits from DeVore and Lerouzes and a bases‑loaded walk to Hill.
After Plattsburgh's lone run in the sixth, Fredonia answered with four more — DeVore doubled and stole third, scored on a wild pitch, and Hill crushed a three‑run homer to center to seal the sweep. Sabrina Edwards‑Smith (4–7) went the distance, scattering four hits and striking out five with no earned runs.
Saturday's doubleheader, scheduled to start at noon, will be preceded by the annual senior day ceremony. The Blue Devils will then be headed to New Paltz for the six-team SUNYAC Tournament next weekend. Their seed and opponent will be known after the competition of regular-season play this weekend.
