CANTON, N.Y. -- Fredonia State used a fast start and a dominant offensive performance from
Mieley Baran to earn a 14-6 victory over Canton on Friday afternoon.
The Devils opened the scoring with three straight goals from
Katie O'Brien, who struck first unassisted before adding two more—one off a feed from
Noelle Mendez and another from
Cailin Karalus to give the Devils a 3-0 lead. Canton got on the board late in the first quarter, but Fredonia State still led 3-1 after one.
In the second quarter, Canton briefly cut into the lead with a man-up goal, but Fredonia State responded immediately. Baran got things going with a goal off a Piper Evangelist assist, followed by Gabby Lewinski finishing a pass from Baran. Baran then scored twice more once from Mendez and again from Evangelist to extend the lead to 7-2. After Canton added another tally, Amelia LeFevre answered with an unassisted goal before Canton closed the half with a man-up score, making it 8-4 at the break.
Fredonia State continued to control play in the second half.
Megan Karalus opened the third quarter with a score off an Evangelist assist to push the lead to five. The Roos added one goal, but Baran responded again, this time on a man-up opportunity from LeFevre to give the Devils a 10-5 advantage heading into the fourth.
In the final quarter, Baran struck early with an unassisted goal before Mendez added another off a feed from
Megan Karalus. Canton scored once more, but Fredonia State closed the game strong with three unanswered goals. Baran netted her sixth of the game, Mendez found the back of the net, and
Leah Kunisch capped the scoring with a man-up goal assisted by Baran to seal the 14-6 win.
Baran led the way offensively for Fredonia State with six goals and two assists for eight points, while O'Brien added a hat trick. Mendez added a goal and three assists while Evangelist tallied three assists of her own. Defensively, the Devils had 11 caused turnovers and 18 ground balls.
In goal,
Ashleigh Manns earned the win, making eight saves while allowing six goals. Canton's Laura Falandys also recorded eight saves in the loss.
Fredonia State (5-7, 1-3 SUNYAC) returns home next on Wednesday, April 8th at 4:00 p.m. for a SUNYAC matchup against Morrisville.
