FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State used a dominant second quarter to defeat Morrisville, 19-11, on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, Fredonia State improves to 6-7 overall and 2-3 in SUNYAC play.
Morrisville opened the scoring just 23 seconds into the game on a goal by Deli Vega-Haley, but Fredonia State quickly responded.
Piper Evangelist evened the score at 1-1 before
Mieley Baran capitalized on a man-up opportunity to give the Devils their first lead. After Morrisville tied things again and briefly went up 3-2, Evangelist struck for her second of the quarter, and
Leah Kunisch followed just 28 seconds later to give Fredonia State a 4-3 lead after one.
The second quarter was all Fredonia State. Baran scored off a
Katie O'Brien assist, sparking a run that saw O'Brien score three times in the period, once off a feed from
Shaliyah Helmick and twice unassisted. Despite a pair of Morrisville goals from Anyssia Ingersoll, Fredonia State continued to pour it on.
Gabby Lewinski and
Jenna Slamka scored in the final minute, and Baran capped the half with a late goal to make it 11-5 at the break.
Morrisville mounted a small comeback in the second half, getting goals from Savanna Scheifla, Samantha Budney, and Ingersoll, but Fredonia State answered each time. Baran and Kunisch each found the back of the net to maintain a six-goal cushion heading into the fourth. The Devils added a few insurance goals early in the fourth to put the game out of reach before trading late scores with Morrisville. Fredonia State final three goals came quickly, including two from O'Brien and one from Kunisch.
O'Brien led the way offensively for the Devils with six goals and two assists, while Baran delivered a standout performance with four goals and five assists for nine points. Defensively,
Noelle Mendez controlled the draw with a team-high 10 draw controls. Morrisville was led by Anyssia Ingersoll, who finished with five goals and one assist, accounting for over half of her team's scoring.
In goal,
Jessica Kowalski earned the win with 11 saves for Fredonia State. On the other side, Aniyah Smith recorded 13 saves for the Mustangs.
he Devils will return to action on Saturday, April 11th at 12:00 p.m. when they travel to face Potsdam in a SUNYAC another conference matchup.
