Offense stalls as Devils drop two at New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- Fredonia State softball struggled to find its rhythm on Friday, dropping a SUNYAC doubleheader on the road at New Paltz by a score of 10-0 in both games. 

Game One:
New Paltz opened the scoring in the first inning behind a two-RBI double from Lauren Serrao, giving the Hawks an early advantage. 

The second inning proved to be the turning point, as New Paltz pieced together a string of hits. Ava Thys delivered a two-RBI double to extend the lead, while Kelsey O'Brien added a sacrifice fly. Later in the inning, Serrao came through again with a two-RBI single, and Jenna Carmody followed with an RBI hit to cap a six-run frame and push the lead to 8-0.

In the third inning, New Paltz added to its lead to make it 10-0. Fredonia State was limited to just one hit in the game, coming from Alexa Bogad

In the circle, Kendall Phillips took the loss  allowing eight runs (seven earned) over two innings. Sabrina Edwards-Smith and Cayzlee Johnson combined to pitch the final two innings. Alex Frenza earned the win for New Paltz, improving to 5-4 with nine strikeouts.

Game Two: 
New Paltz once again struck early in Game Two, plating three runs in the first inning.The Hawks added to the lead in the second inning when Mallory Rohon lifted a sacrifice fly to center, making it 4-0. The third inning saw New Paltz break the game open once again with several hits to push their lead to 9-0. 

New Paltz scored its final run in the fourth inning when Darian Palmer reached on a ball in play that brought a run home, extending the lead to 10-0. Fredonia State again finished with just one hit, this time from Kayla Jo Lynn

Sabrina Edwards-Smith was charged with the loss for Fredonia State while New Paltz's Morgan Smith picked up her third win of the season. 

The Devils now sit at 4-13 on the season and 0-2 in SUNYAC play. Fredonia State will look to bounce back in its next outing at Oneonta, with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at noon on Saturday, April 4th.
