Devils fall to Cortland in weather-shortened matchup

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State women's lacrosse saw its matchup against Cortland cut short due to lightning in the area, as the Red Dragons came away with a 13-4 victory on Wednesday afternoon.

Cortland to start the game controlled the pace early, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter. Fredonia State broke through in the second quarter when Gabby Lewinski got the Devils on the board with an unassisted goal at 13:27. Later in the period, Mieley Baran capitalized on a feed from Noelle Mendez to cut into the deficit. However, the Red Dragons maintained control and took an 8-2 lead into halftime.

Out of the break, the Devils showed promise as Megan Karalus scored off an assist from Lewinski at 10:14, and just 35 seconds later Katie O'Brien added another unassisted goal to bring the Devils within four at 8-4. That momentum was short-lived unfortunately, as Cortland answered with a quick scoring run to close out the third quarter and extend its lead back to seven.

Cortland added two more goals early in the fourth before lightning in the area forced the game to be called early, sealing the 13-4 final.

Kowalski was a bright spot in net for Fredonia State, finishing with 11 saves while facing 24 shots on goal. On the other side, Cortland's Trinity Parks made two saves in the win. Lewinski led Fredonia State with a goal and an assist while Ashley Melillo and Sydney Elizalde led the way with four goals apiece for Cortland.

With the loss, Fredonia State moves to 7-9 overall and 3-5 in SUNYAC play. The Devils will return home for Senior Day on Saturday, April 18th at 12:00 p.m., when they host Plattsburgh.
