Devils fall in weather shortened game

DAVENPORT, Fla. -- Fredonia State showed promise in their third game in Florida against Rutgers-Newark. The Devil's erased a early deficit with a two-run third inning but Rutgers-Newark had the go-ahead run in the eighth to hand the Devils a 3-2 loss Saturday. The game was called before the start of the ninth inning due to lightning in the area. "We have yet play complete team baseball so far this spring." said Head Coach Frank Jagoda III "Our effort is there, we will turn things around, one day at a time."

To start the game, Rutgers-Newark grabbed the first run in the top of the second. Malik Little led off with a double to left-center and later came home on Damon Rivera's RBI single to right. The Devils answered in the bottom of the third after Ryan Mettler lined a single to center to bring home Domenic Hickock and tie the game. Later in the inning Andrew Tucker lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score Nick Vitelli and give Fredonia State a 2-1 lead.

Rutgers-Newark tied the game in the sixth, scoring an unearned run after on Rivera's second RBI single of the day. The Scarlet Raiders then took the lead for good in the eighth when Jonathan Jerez hit a RBI double to go up 3-2.

Fredonia finished with seven hits, led by Hickock's 3 for 4 hitting. Vito Verni added two hits as well, while Vitelli scored once and reached base twice.

On the mound, Michael Byrns gave Fredonia State a steady start, allowing one run on two hits over three innings of work with one strikeout. Michael Gangloff followed with three innings and had two strike outs. Rutgers-Newark starter Luke Hagen worked the first three innings and allowed two runs, while Lukas Meyer earned the win for the Scarlet Raiders.

Fredonia will be back in action next against Franklin & Marshall at N.E. Regional Park #1 in Davenport, Fla., with first pitch set for 6:45 p.m.
