Devils blanked twice on opening day

CLERMONT, Fla. — Fredonia State opened its 2026 season Friday at the National Training Center, falling to Belhaven and Coe while turning double plays in both games.

Belhaven 13, Fredonia 0 (5 inn.)

Belhaven used two big innings to separate, led by multi‑RBI efforts from Melissa Lopera and Maryanna Guy. The Blue Devils turned a double play to end the second when Kayla Jo Lynn snared a liner and threw to Brooke Caldwell to double off a runner at second. They.got 2.2/3 innings of steady relief from Sabrina Edwards‑Smith.

Belhaven's staff of AR Sharp and Laura Beth Nesmith combined for a no‑hitter, striking out 10. The liner in the right-center gap off the bat of Madison Lowe in the first inning was the closest the Blue Devils came to getting a hit. Fredonia's baserunners came on walks to Madison Devore and Claire Reccardi.

Coe 6, Fredonia 0

Fredonia broke into the hit column with Lowe's infield single in the fourth and Kirsten Lajewski's center‑field single in the seventh.

The Devils turned their second double play of the day — a 3B‑to‑1B turn in the sixth by Lynn — and kept Coe's damage to short bursts, with Maddie Harris the Kohawks' lone multi‑RBI hitter.

Edwards‑Smith added 2.1 more innings of contact‑managed relief, finishing the day with 5.0 total innings and only four earned runs allowed.

The Blue Devils are back in action Sunday against nationally ranked Rowan at 10 a.m. and Wisconsin-Platteville at 12:15 p.m.. Both games will be played in Winter Haven, Fla.
