FREDONIA, N.Y. -- For the third straight game, the Fredonia State men's hockey team found itself in overtime. However, they would pull this one out for a 4-3 victory to snap a five-game skid. The Devils, who entered the extra frame with an extra skater due to a penalty on Potsdam late in the third, used the 4-on-3 to their advantage.
Owen Cross ripped a one-timer into the net to end the game.
The excitement was compounded with the capacity crowd for the annual Pink the Rink game.
The teams traded goals in the first period. Potsdam's Jakub Hall scored first, then the Devils'
Cash Anderson answered to tie the game at 1-1.
Potsdam's Eli Doughart-Wood scored the lone goal of the second period.
In the third period, Fredonia State's
Keenan McNeill and
Ethan Pitzman took turns scoring to give the Devils their first lead of the game, 3-3.
Potsdam tied things on a power play by Ryan Mahlmeister at 16:51.
The Devils would need 1:20 of overtime for Cross to find the net for the winning score. He was assisted by
Owen Arnold and Anderson.
Charles-Anthony Barbeau made 32 saves in a winning effort for the Devils, now 4-17-1 and 4-10-1 in the SUNYAC. Lenny Perno had 19 stops for the Bears.
The Bears stand at 7-13-2 overall and 4-9-2 in the conference.
The Devils take on Canton for a 6 p.m. start on Saturday evening.
