Blue Devils fall short in SUNYAC women's soccer final

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The historic postseason run of the Fredonia State women's soccer team came to an end on Saturday as the Blue Devils fell to Cortland, 4-1, in the SUNYAC Tournament final at Holloway Field.

The appearance marked the first trip to the conference championship game in program history for Fredonia, which concluded one of the most successful seasons the program has ever enjoyed with a 12-4-4 record. The 12 wins matched a school record previously reached by the 2011, 2012 and 2024 teams.

Gabby Irwin had the lone Devil goal, converting a penalty kick during the 89th minute. Goalkeeper Alyssa Hatch totaled 10 saves. Hatch, Irwin and Makayla Stainbrook were selected to the SUNYAC All-Tournament Team.

Cortland struck first in the 13th minute when Gianna Cirilla headed home a free kick service for a 1-0 lead. The Red Dragons doubled the advantage less than five minutes later as Tyla Vuotto redirected a cross into the net, and Leah Rehm extended the lead to 3-0 with a long-range strike in the 43rd minute.

Cirilla added her second goal of the match in the 87th minute to make it 4-0 before Fredonia answered in the closing moments. After a foul in the penalty area, Irwin converted her PK after she was taken down in the box.
