FREDONIA, N.Y. — The Fredonia State men's soccer team defeated Oswego State, 8-7, during a dramatic penalty kick shootout Wednesday afternoon at University Stadium after the teams battled to a scoreless tie in the SUNYAC Tournament First Round. With the PK victory, the Blue Devils advance to a Second Round matchup with Buffalo State on Saturday.
Fredonia controlled much of the run of play, holding a 16-2 advantage in shots and a 7-1 edge in corner kicks. The Blue Devils generated four shots on goals.
After 110 minutes of play, the match shifted to penalty kicks, where the drama intensified immediately. Liam Brown eventually buried the winner in the ninth round.
Oswego had taken a 1-0 lead in the shootout after one round and had a chance to clinch the victory in the fifth, but its game-winning attempt missed the mark. The teams tied at 4-4 through five rounds and then went shot-for-shot before Blue Devil goalkeeper Thomas McDonald made a stop in the ninth. That set the stage for Brown's game-ender.
Fredonia had successful PK conversions from Sam Evans, Brendan Adams, Lee Hartke, McDonald, Thomas Polek, Jackson Kuby, Dylan McAfee, and, finally, Brown.
