CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women's basketball team played SUNYAC-leading Cortland tight for three quarters, before a decisive 19-5 fourth quarter put the game away for the Dragons in a 62-41 victory for the hosts. Fredonia State was led by
Payton Gilbert with 12 points.
Aliyah Hopkins grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, and added five points.
Cortland had a 28-25 lead at the half in the low-scoring affair. The Devils' final lead came at the 5:27 mark of the second quarter. A layup and a three pointer by
Kaylyn Sweeney gave the Devils a 23-22 lead. Sweeney would finish with eight points.
The third quarter, Cortland extended its lead to seven points when they outscored the Devils 15-11, before Cortland took care of business in the final quarter.
Cortland was led by Jackie Funk with 19 points, and Jolene Lusk had 14 points. The Red Dragons improve to 3-0 in the SUNYAC and 8-2 overall.
Both teams grabbed 34 rebounds. Cortland won the turnover battle with 10 miscues compared to 18 by the Devils. The Devils only got to the line eight times, shooting 5-8, while Cortland was 14-20.
Next up for the Devils 6-4/1-2 SUNYAC is a women's/men's doubleheader vs. Buffalo State on Thursday, Jan. 8. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m. in Dods Hall.
