OSWEGO, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State softball team dominated in a Thursday doubleheader against Canton. In game one the Devils secured a 16-2 victory before edging out the Roos 5-4 in game game two. The wins improve Fredonia State's record to 12-16 overall and 9-5 in SUNYAC play.
Game One:
Fredonia State exploded early in game one, plating four runs in the top of the first.
Kayla Jo Lynn started the scoring by singling and eventually crossing the plate on an RBI single by
Allie Wandell.
Avery Hill followed with an RBI single of her own before
Madison Lowe tripled in another run and
Kirsten Lajewski capped off the frame with an RBI single to make it 4-0.
The second inning proved to be the knockout blow, as the Devils erupted for 11 more runs on 12 hits.
Madison Devore opened the frame with a triple, and Lynn drove her in with a single. Hill delivered a 2-RBI double, Lowe added another RBI hit, and Lajewski and Wandell each contributed more runs as Fredonia batted around. By the end of the inning, it was 14-0.
A sacrifice fly from Devore in the third scored
Emily Tytler, and a double by Tytler followed by a single from
Kate Kenny in the fifth made it 16-2.
Kendall Phillips was dominant in the circle for the Devils, allowing just two hits and two runs over five innings while striking out ten. Canton's only runs came in the third on a bunt single and an infield RBI hit.
Game Two:
Game two was a tighter contest, but again the Devils struck first with three runs in the opening frame. Lynn singled and came around on a double by Wandell. Arianna LeRouzes added an RBI single, and
Chloe Whittingham followed with an RBI single of her own to cap off the rally.
Canton responded with two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning, but the Devils added insurance in the fifth. Wandell doubled again, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored on another clutch hit from Whittingham. Fredonia State extended the lead to 5-2 in the sixth when
Mack Celauro came around to score following a fielding error.
Canton staged a late comeback with two runs in the seventh, highlighted by a RBI triple from Torie Moore and a successful steal of home, However the next batter grounded out to the pitcher to end the game. Sabrina Edwards-Smit held on to earn the victory for the Devils, pitching a complete game, striking out 13 and allowing just three hits.
Fredonia State will be back in action on Friday, May 2nd, for another SUNYAC doubleheader against New Paltz. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
