Devils season ends with Tourney loss

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- The New Paltz Hawks swarming defense never allowed the Devils to get rolling, and dealt the Fredonia State women's lacrosse team a 20-5 loss in the opening round of the SUNYAC Tournament on Saturday. Mieley Baran scored a pair of goals, and Cailin Karalus, Noelle Mendez, and Sydney Buchko each added scores.

New Paltz scored the first seven goals before Buchko finally got the Devils on the board. Her 42nd score of the season made it 7-1 with just over two minutes left in the first quarter. New Paltz would build a 13-3 lead by the half.

New Paltz scored three unanswered goals in the third quarter. Baran capped the scoring in the frame with 26th goal of the season, but the Devils would find themselves in a 16-4 hole.

The Hawks outscored the Devils 5-1 in the fourth, with Mendez accounting for Fredonia State's only score of the quarter.

Ashleigh Manns was in net for the Devils, making a season-high 15 saves, and giving up the 20 goals.

New Paltz was led by Lexi Atwater with five goals as 11 different Hawks connected for scores.

The Devils end their season with a 9-9 mark.
