FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State lacrosse team found itself down 5-0 after the first quarter but battled back to make a game of it before falling 17-10 to the New Paltz Hawks. The Devils hung with the Hawks with both teams scoring seven goals over the second and third quarters. New Paltz pulled away late, outscoring the Devils 4-2 in the final frame.
Mieley Baran had four goals and
Noelle Mendez had two and an assist to lead the Fredonia State offense.
Emma Cockerell added one goal and three assists.
Lexi Atwater had six goals, and Morgan Atwater and Kaitlyn Shaw had four apiece to pace New Paltz.
Following the Hawks 5-0 lead, the Devils scored four of the next five goals to pull within a couple, 6-4. They would pull within two points on three other occasions, the last time following a goal by Cockerell with 4:43 left in the third, making it a 10-8 game. New Paltz registered seven of the next nine scores to pull away, improving to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the SUNYAC.
Ashleigh Manns was in net for the Devils, making 14 saves. Gabriella Tommaso and Piper Mascaros split time in goal for New Paltz, and combined to make five saves.
