FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Fredonia State women's lacrosse team put together a strong offensive performance to defeat Chatham University 10-7 at University Stadium on Tuesday evening. With the win, the Blue Devils improve to 3-1 on the season, while Chatham drops to 0-3.
The game saw a tight first half, but the Devils pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring Chatham 4-1 in the period to take control of the contest. Senior Sydney Buchko led the charge with a game-high four goals and three assists, making her the top performer for Fredonia State.
Chatham opened the scoring with an early goal from Sam Beall-Dennell, but the Devils responded with Kiera Young finding the back of the net off an assist from Mieley Baran. The teams traded goals in the first half, with Fredonia State holding a slight 4-3 lead at the break.
The second half belonged to the Devils, as Buchko scored twice in the third quarter, while Emma Cockerel added two of her three goals in the period. Cockerel finished the game with three goals and one assist. Noelle Mendez and Cailin Karalus each added a goal, while Baran dished out three assists in the victory.
On the defensive end, goalie Ashleigh Manns stood tall for Fredonia State, recording six saves and earning the win. Chatham's goalkeeper Meghan Cuza-Berry made 11 saves in a valiant effort but took the loss. For Chatham, Beall-Dennell led the way with four goals, while Tessa Heuber contributed a goal and an assist. Despite a late push from the Cougars, Fredonia held strong in the final quarter to seal the win.
Fredonia State will look to continue their momentum when they return to action on Wednesday, March 12, at home against Allegheny College at 5:00 p.m.
