POTSDAM, N.Y. – A strong start and key performances propelled the Fredonia State women's basketball team to a 66-54 victory over Potsdam on Friday.
The Devils jumped out to a 16-8 first quarter lead behind Jayssa Snelick's early shooting. Fredonia State continued to dominate the second quarter, extending the lead to 33-21 at halftime.
Despite a strong third-quarter push from Potsdam, the Devils responded with a balanced attack. Snelick continued to shine, hitting a key three-pointer late in the third, while Jaden Sciotti and Alexys Neckers knocked down clutch threes to help maintain the lead. Potsdam mounted a late rally in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to single digits at one point, but Fredonia State's defense and free throws down the stretch sealed the win for Devils.
The Devils defense forced 16 turnovers and snagged 40 rebounds. The Devils hit nine three pointers, shooting 36% from beyond the arc. Leading the way for Fredonia State was Snelick, who finished with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Mary Culeton added nine points and four rebounds, while Grace Alexande chipped in nine points as well. Allie Wandell was a force on the glass, securing 11 rebounds to go along with six points.
Potsdam was led by Barbara Bruno who scored 14 points with Carley Hill adding 12 points for the Bears. .
With this win, Fredonia State improves to 9-14 on the season and 6-11 in SUNYAC play. The Devils will look to close out the season on the road at Plattsburgh on Saturday February 22nd at 2:00 p.m.
