PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women's basketball team wrapped up their season in a nail-biting match up against Plattsburgh State, falling 53-49.
Fredonia State came out firing in the opening quarter, outscoring Plattsburgh 21-12 behind an impressive shooting performance from beyond the arc. Allie Wandell got the scoring started with a three-pointer just seconds into the game. Jayssa Snelick was a key contributor, sinking two of her three three-pointers in the first period to help the Devils establish an early lead.
The second quarter saw a more balanced contest, with both teams scoring 14 points. Payton Gilbert provided a spark for Fredonia State, scoring six points in the quarter, while the Devils went into the half preserving a nine-point halftime lead at 35-26. Momentum began to shift in the third quarter as Plattsburgh continued their defensive pressure and found their rhythm offensively, outscoring Fredonia State18-11.
The Devils found themselves down in the fourth quarter, a crucial three-pointer from Grace Alexander briefly gave Fredonia State a 49-48 lead with just over three minutes left. However, Plattsburgh responded with a clutch jumper from Payton Couture to reclaim the advantage. Fredonia struggled to get clean looks in the final minute, and a pair of free throws from Couture sealed the win for the Cardinals.
Gilbert led the way for Fredonia with 16 points and five rebounds. Snelick added 13 points and a team high 14 rebounds, while Wandell contributed 10 points and eight boards. Mary Culeton made her presence felt on the glass, grabbing 10 rebounds and dishing out four assists.
Pilattsburgh's Julia Greek and Payton Couture led the Cardinals, scoring 12 and 11 points.
The Devils conclude their season posting a record of 9-15 and 6-12 in the SUNYAC.
